"Subaru of America, Inc. has introduced the all-new Baja crossover vehicle and a completely redesigned second-generation Forester compact SUV for 2003. Freshened front styling and new standard equipment enhance the value in the Legacy and Outback model lines, and the new-generation Impreza – just introduced for model-year 2002 – gains convenience enhancements. Every 2003 Subaru comes equipped with standard full-time All-Wheel Drive, making Subaru the leading marketer of All-Wheel Drive passenger cars and crossover-type vehicles in the United States. Baja Blends Pickup and Passenger Car The unique Baja is a new type of crossover vehicle that blends the versatility and ruggedness of a compact 4-door pickup truck with the driving dynamics, safety and comfort of a passenger car. Based on the Legacy/Outback platform and inspired by the Subaru ST-X Concept Vehicle, the Baja offers cargo-carrying versatility not possible in a sedan or wagon. The key to the Subaru Baja model’s versatility is the Subaru-designed Switchback system that provides the ability to reconfigure the rear seating area, as well as the cargo bed, to meet a variety of needs when transporting people and cargo. The rear seatbacks fold down to add interior storage, and the Switchback panel between the cargo bed and interior section can be lowered to then extend the cargo floor area length. Lowering the tailgate and attaching the Subaru accessory bed extender lengthens the bed to 60.5 inches. Lowering the rear seat and Switchback cargo bed door can then provide a maximum load floor length of about 75 inches for carrying long items. The 2003 Baja is powered by a 165-horsepower 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine. Standard amenities include air conditioning, a 6-way power driver’s seat, perforated leather-trimmed upholstery, keyless entry and a power moonroof.
Second-Generation Forester The Forester has been one of the best-selling models in the Subaru line since the first-generation model was introduced for model-year 1998.The boldly styled second-generation Forester builds upon the “best of both worlds” crossover SUV approach established by the previous model while making significant enhancements overall in safety, comfort, refinement and driving dynamics. Overview/3ഊLike the original Forester, the new-generation model blends positive SUV attributes such as a high seating point and interior versatility with passenger car comfort, handling and fuel efficiency. For 2003, Subaru offers the Forester 2.5 X and uplevel 2.5 XS models, both powered by a 165-horsepower 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine. An available Premium Package for the 2.5 XS includes a power moonroof and monotone body color. Other chassis upgrades include larger front brake rotors, variable ratio rack and pinion steering, standard 16-inch wheels across the model line and, on the 2.5 XS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution. On models equipped with the five-speed manual transmission, the Subaru Hill Holder clutch helps make starting off on an incline easier and safer.
Legacy Gains Styling, Performance and Value Enhancements All Legacy models for 2003 receive a freshened look with a new front bumper/fascia and grill, and the Legacy L models also gain body-color door handles, side moldings and exterior mirrors for a cleaner appearance. A new 2.5 GT model consolidates the former Legacy GT and GT Limited models and features leather-trimmed seats and the All-Weather Package as standard equipment. When equipped with the optional 4-speed automatic transmission, the Legacy 2.5 GT now uses the brand’s most advanced All-Wheel Drive system,Variable Torque Distribution (VTD), plus a new SPORTSHIFT feature that allows manual gearshift control. Also new for the 2003 Legacy L Sedan and L Wagon models is a Special Edition Package that adds some equipment from the Legacy 2.5 GT, including a power moonroof, 16-inch alloy wheels, projector-beam halogen foglights and interior upgrades. Audio upgrades include a single-disc CD player in Legacy L models and an in-dash 6-disc CD changer in the 2.5 GT.
Outback Adds Freshened Styling and Additional Standard Equipment For 2003, the six-cylinder Outback H6-3.0 models come standard with the OnStar in-vehicle wireless communication service for 2003. These models will include a one-year subscription to the security and safety services package provided by OnStar. All Outback models for 2003 feature freshened front-end styling, suspension revisions that improve ride and handling and refinements that enhance comfort and convenience. The Outback Wagon for 2003 adds as standard the formerly optional All-Weather Package that includes dual-mode heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer. All Outback H6-3.0 models for 2003 also include a standard security system. Audio system upgrades include a single-disc CD player for the Outback Wagon and, on Outback Limited models, a 6-disc in-dash CD changer and a rear subwoofer speaker system. The H6-3.0 Sedan and the H6-3.0 L.L. Bean Edition Wagon also feature the upgraded speaker system. The Subaru flagship Outback H6-3.0 VDC models add a 6-disc in-dash CD changer to their high-end McIntosh audio systems for 2003. The Outback H6-3.0 L.L.Bean Edition gets new beige perforated leather trimmed seats embossed with the L.L.Bean insignia.
Impreza Subaru launched the new-generation Impreza line for model-year 2002, including the rally-bred turbocharged/intercooled WRX models. All Impreza models receive convenience enhancements for 2003.
