We think you’ll agree we could sell our new Subaru GL Coupe on just its looks. But we’ve got no illusions. A pretty face is not enough for your kind of driving. That’s why we ask you to look over our new GL Coupe very carefully and then to give it a thorough test.
You’re in for a surprise. There’s a full independent suspension all around, with beefy McPherson struts up front and individually acting torsion bars and drag links out back. The
great set of radials is standard. And so are the big disc brakes up front. On the road, you’ll find the rack and pinion steering light and very precise.
Combine our standard handling package with the almost unbelievable traction of Front Wheel Drive and you’ll corner well. Very well. The engine is a high-revving four in opposed layout and liquid cooled for uniform heat exchange and less running noise.
And you won’t see a power-robbing, engine driven cooling fan. Instead, a thermostatically controlled electric fan works with the radiator to keep things well under control.
We displace 1.3 liters and if your license can stand the points, you can go right through the speed limit in 49 states. In third. (But, for your
own good, don’t!) All on regular gas. Stay away from stoplight challenges and you can actually average up to 30 mpg — or more. The four-speed gearbox is all very smooth synchro and has a fast, direct linkage. It’s a quiet gearbox, too.
Remember, everything you'll see on the GL Coupe you test drive is standard. (Although air conditioning is available, too.)
